EDITORS COMMENTS
In this 1930 portrait, Thelma, Lady Furness (née Thelma Morgan) is depicted with her cherubic young son, Hon. Anthony William Furness. The image, published in the esteemed society magazine The Tatler, captures the elegance and sophistication of the English aristocracy during the 1930s. Born in 1904, Thelma's life was marked by a series of high-profile marriages and romantic intrigues. Her first marriage was to Sir Henry de la Poer Beresford, 8th Marquess of Waterford, which ended in divorce. In 1929, she wed Marmaduke Furness, 1st Viscount Furness, the head of the renowned Furness shipping company. Although their marriage also ended in divorce in 1933, Thelma continued to hold the title of Viscountess Furness and maintained her position within the aristocratic circles. Before her marriage to Marmaduke, Thelma was the mistress of Edward, Prince of Wales, preceding Wallis Simpson in his affections. This scandalous liaison added to her allure and notoriety within the upper echelons of society. Despite the tumultuous nature of her personal life, Thelma's impeccable style and poised demeanor are on full display in this portrait. She wears an elegant dress with a flattering neckline and accessorizes with a string of pearls, while her son, Anthony, gazes up at her with innocent curiosity. The photograph is a testament to the glamour and intrigue of the British aristocracy during the 1930s. This evocative image, captured by the renowned Illustrated London News Ltd, offers a glimpse into the lives of the aristocrats who shaped society during this era. It serves as a reminder of a time when titles, wealth, and scandal held immense power and fascination.
