EDITORS COMMENTS
Upper Fire-Hole, Yellowstone National Park, 1874: A Historical Snapshot of America's First National Park This engraving, depicting the Upper Fire-Hole in Yellowstone National Park, was produced in 1874 using a photograph taken by Mr. Serjeant Sleigh during the initial survey of the National Park. The National Park was established on March 1, 1872, when President Ulysses S. Grant signed the bill creating it for the benefit and enjoyment of the American people. The Upper Fire-Hole, located in the Upper Geyser Basin, is shown in this image as viewed from the direction of Old Faithful geyser. The fire hole is a thermal feature characterized by its bright orange and yellow colors, created by the interaction between hot water and minerals. This historical image offers a glimpse into the early exploration of Yellowstone National Park, which was the world's first national park. The park's unique geothermal features, including geysers, hot springs, and fumaroles, had long been known to Native American tribes, but it was not until the late 1800s that European-Americans began to explore and document them. The survey of Yellowstone National Park, led by Lieutenant Gustavus Cheyney Doane and Captain Lucien Michael Mosby of the U.S. Army, took place between July and September 1871. The team included artists, scientists, and other experts who documented the park's natural wonders and helped to bring attention to its unique beauty and importance. This engraving, produced from Serjeant Sleigh's photograph, is an important historical record of the early exploration and documentation of Yellowstone National Park. It offers a window into the past, allowing us to appreciate the natural wonders that inspired the creation of America's first national park.
