EDITORS COMMENTS
Tristan da Cunha: A Scouting Expedition in the Late 1800s This photograph, believed to have been taken in the late 1860s, depicts an intriguing scene of exploration and camaraderie on the remote and unspoiled island of Tristan da Cunha. The island, located in the South Atlantic Ocean, was first discovered in 1506 by the Portuguese explorer Tristão da Cunha, and has since remained a fascinating enigma to the outside world. In this image, we see a group of intrepid explorers, led by Sir John Powell, a British naval officer and explorer, taking a break during a scouting expedition. The men, dressed in their explorer attire, are gathered around a makeshift campfire, with one figure, believed to be a young scout, holding up a map for the group's inspection. The rugged terrain and dramatic cliffs of Tristan da Cunha can be seen in the background, adding to the sense of adventure and discovery. The association of this photograph with the Scouting movement is not definitively known, but the image of a young scout holding up a map resonates strongly with the values and principles of the Scouting movement, which was founded by Lord Baden-Powell in 1907. This photograph serves as a reminder of the spirit of exploration and adventure that has long been a part of the human experience, and the enduring appeal of the natural world and its hidden wonders.
