Born into poverty in London's East End, Thorne began his working life at the age of six, laboring in a match factory. He joined the Matchgirls' Strike in 1888, which brought about significant improvements in working conditions and wages for women matchworkers. Thorne went on to become a leading figure in the National Union of Agricultural Workers and the National Union of General and Municipal Workers. In 1900, Thorne was elected as a Labour Party Member of Parliament for Bermondsey, making him one of the first Labour MPs in British history. Thorne's unwavering commitment to social justice and workers' rights earned him a place in the annals of British labour history.
