EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage photograph captures a Sukhoi Su-2 light bomber from the year 1937, already outdated by mid-1941 when this image was taken. With a production total of 910 units, this Soviet aircraft was an essential component of the Red Air Force's arsenal during the early stages of World War II. However, its antiquated design and limited defensive capabilities made it a prime target for the advanced Luftwaffe fighters. The Su-2, also known as the "Shkapa," was initially intended to provide close air support and ground attack capabilities to Soviet ground forces. Its open-cockpit design and fixed landing gear were typical of the era, but its armament of two 7.62mm machine guns and a bomb load of up to 1,320 pounds gave it a formidable presence on the battlefield. Despite its limitations, the Su-2 saw extensive combat during the early months of the war. In this photograph, we see the battle-scarred remains of one such aircraft, its once-shiny metal surface now pockmarked with bullet holes and scratches. The determined expression of the pilot in the cockpit speaks volumes about the courage and resilience of the Soviet airmen who flew these obsolete planes against the superior Luftwaffe. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the early days of the war and the importance of technological advancement in the face of adversity. It also serves as a testament to the bravery and determination of the men and women who flew these planes and fought for their country.
