Stanley's triumphant homecoming marked the successful completion of his Emin Pasha Relief Expedition to rescue the stranded governor of Equatoria, in what is now South Sudan. The Emin Pasha Relief Expedition, which began in 1887, was a significant event in the annals of Victorian-era exploration.
