EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures a pivotal moment in the Peninsula War, as Napoleon Bonaparte personally directs a daring cavalry charge against a formidable Spanish battery at the Battle of Somo-Sierra on November 30, 1808. The Peninsula War, waged between 1807 and 1814, was a significant campaign in the Napoleonic Wars, with Spain refusing to acknowledge Napoleon as their ruler and instead aligning themselves with Britain. The Battle of Somo-Sierra marked a crucial turning point in the war, as the French forces, led by Napoleon himself, sought to advance towards Madrid, the Spanish capital. The Spanish, determined to protect their city, had set up a strong defensive position on the heights of Somo-Sierra, with a battery of artillery positioned to block the French advance. Despite the risks, Napoleon ordered a cavalry charge, leading from the front and urging his troops on with a wave of his hat. The charge was a success, with the Spanish battery being overrun, and the French forces able to continue their advance towards Madrid. This print, produced in the aftermath of the battle, captures the drama and intensity of the moment, with Napoleon's horse rearing up and the Spanish gunners shown in a state of shock and disbelief. The rugged terrain and harsh winter conditions add to the sense of struggle and determination, making this a powerful and enduring image from the Peninsula War.
