EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant image captures the moment of respite for 240455 Private George Barrow of the 6th Battalion, Oxford & Bucks Light Infantry, during the harsh realities of the First World War. Born in Bermondsey, London, Barrow enlisted in Camberwell and lived in Kennington before being called to the battlefields of Belgium. The soldier is depicted in his uniform, complete with bowler hat and the distinctive cap badge of the Oxford & Bucks Light Infantry. In his hands, he holds a pipe, taking a moment to smoke and perhaps reflect on the memories of home that were now so far away. The sketch, taken from Barrow's personal Sketch Book, provides a rare glimpse into the daily life of a soldier during this time. Tragically, Barrow's story did not have a happy ending. He lost his life on active service on August 31, 1917, and is buried at the Mendinghem Military Cemetery in Poperinge, West-Flaanderen, Belgium. His grave reference is Va14. This poignant image serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by soldiers like Barrow during the First World War. The sketch, now preserved in the archives, offers a unique insight into the experiences of those who served, and the personal stories that lie behind the statistics and history books.
