In Aristophanes' classic play "The Frogs," Dionysos is depicted here with his loyal servant Xanthias, as they make their way to the underworld to retrieve the playwright Euripides and bring him back to Athens to compete against the contemporary playwright Agathon. The Frogs, first performed in 405 BC, is a significant work in the history of ancient Greek theater.
