EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the momentous start of the England to Australia flight from Hounslow Aerodrome in London on 12 November 1919. The intrepid aviators, Ross Smith and Keith Smith, are seen standing next to their Vimy aircraft, with their support crew, Sergeants J.M. (Jim) Bennett and W.M. (Wally) Shiers. The dashing quartet is dressed in flying gear, ready for the long and arduous journey ahead. The Vimy, a two-engine biplane designed by R.K. Pierson, is prominently displayed in the foreground. This aircraft, which was specifically built for the record-breaking flight, would carry the Smith brothers and their crew across continents and oceans, setting new long-distance aviation records. The England to Australia flight was a groundbreaking achievement in aviation history. It marked the first time that a flight had successfully crossed the world from east to west, and it established the Smith brothers as pioneering figures in aviation. The flight took 27 days, 19 hours, and 50 minutes, covering a distance of over 12,000 miles (19,312 kilometers). This photograph is a testament to the courage, determination, and ingenuity of these early aviators, who pushed the boundaries of what was thought possible in the field of aviation. It is a powerful reminder of the spirit of adventure that drove men and women to take to the skies and explore the vast expanses of our world.
