HMS Hermes (R12) Shortly After Being Accepted by the Royal Navy, 1959: A Historic Moment in Maritime Aviation This evocative black-and-white photograph captures the historic moment when HMS Hermes (R12) was formally accepted into the Royal Navy fleet in 1959. The aircraft carrier, which was the first of its kind to be operated by the Royal Navy, is shown here shortly after her completion at the Vickers-Armstrongs shipyard in Newcastle upon Tyne. The image showcases the impressive size and scale of the Hermes, with her distinctive island superstructure and flight deck stretching out towards the camera. At the time, she was the largest warship ever built in the United Kingdom, and her acceptance marked a significant milestone in the Royal Navy's maritime aviation history. In the foreground, a line of Sea Hawk jet fighters can be seen parked on the flight deck, ready for takeoff. These aircraft were the first to be operated from a British aircraft carrier, and they represented the cutting edge of aviation technology at the time. The Sea Hawks were a key component of the Hermes' air group, which also included helicopters and other fixed-wing aircraft. The acceptance of HMS Hermes (R12) marked the beginning of a new era in the Royal Navy's capabilities, enabling the service to project power and influence across the world's oceans. This photograph is a testament to the innovation, engineering prowess, and determination of those involved in her design, construction, and operation.
