EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the sleek and powerful Curtiss Model 95 XP-60C, registration number 42-79424, as it soars through the clear blue sky. The XP-60C, also known as the Curtiss Hawk 95, was a single-engine, all-metal, low-wing monoplane fighter aircraft developed by the Curtiss-Wright Corporation for the United States Army Air Corps. Designed as a successor to the successful Curtiss Hawk 75, the XP-60C was the first American fighter to exceed 400 miles per hour in level flight. Its advanced features included a retractable landing gear, a variable-pitch propeller, and a powerful Pratt & Whitney R-2800-10 Double Wasp engine. The XP-60C made its first flight on March 26, 1942, and went on to serve in various roles during World War II, including as a fighter, fighter-bomber, and trainer. This particular aircraft, 42-79424, was one of the first production models and saw action in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations. This photograph captures the XP-60C in its element, with the sun casting a golden glow on its gleaming wings and the engine roaring in the background. The pilot, clad in his flying gear, appears focused and determined as he expertly maneuvers the powerful machine through the sky. The image is a testament to the beauty, power, and ingenuity of aviation technology during World War II.
