RMS Aquitania in Liverpool: A Glimpse into Maritime History This evocative photograph captures the majestic RMS Aquitania as she graces the waters of Liverpool's famous dockyard. Launched on May 29, 1914, the Aquitania was a Cunard White Star liner, measuring an impressive 901 feet in length and weighing 45,647 tons. The Aquitania was a true marvel of the steam ship era, setting numerous records during her illustrious career. She was the first ship to reach an average speed of 22 knots during a transatlantic crossing, and held the Blue Riband for the fastest transatlantic crossing for several years. Despite her grandeur, the Aquitania's tenure on the high seas was not without its challenges. She served as a troopship during World War I, transporting thousands of soldiers to and from Europe. And in the aftermath of the war, she was converted to a luxury liner, offering opulent accommodations and world-class amenities to passengers seeking to escape the rigors of everyday life. However, like all things, time eventually caught up with the RMS Aquitania. In 1950, she was scrapped, marking the end of an era in maritime history. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the Aquitania's storied past, and the indelible impact she left on the world of steam shipping.
