Rifle, Bolt Action, Lee Enfield, . 303 In No 5 Mk I
Lee Enfield. 303 in No 5 Mk I bolt action rifle, 1944 (c); known as the Jungle Carbine; fitted with flash eliminator, sling swivels and a rubber cushion on the buttplate. Operations in the Far East convinced the British army that a lighter version of the Lee-Enfield rifle would be more suited to jungle warfare. The No 4 Mark 1 rifle was shortened, a flash-hider fitted to the muzzle and to counteract the increased recoil due to the short barrel and light weight, a rubber butt-pad was introduced. First produced in the autumn of 1944, it was widely issued to troops in the Far East, but its still excessive recoil and muzzle-blast made it an unpopular weapon. Date: circa 1944

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a close-up view of a No 5 Mk I Lee Enfield bolt action rifle chambered in .303 caliber, produced during the year 1944. Known as the "Jungle Carbine," this rifle was a modified version of the standard Lee-Enfield rifle, specifically designed for use in the challenging conditions of jungle warfare in the Far East. During World War II, it became apparent that the longer and heavier Lee-Enfield rifles were not well-suited to the jungle environment. In response, the British army shortened the No 4 Mark 1 rifle, fitted it with a flash eliminator, sling swivels, and a rubber cushion on the buttplate to create the No 5 Mk I. The flash eliminator helped reduce the muzzle flash, while the sling swivels allowed for easier carrying, and the rubber butt-pad helped absorb the excessive recoil. Despite these improvements, the No 5 Mk I remained an unpopular weapon among troops due to its still significant recoil and muzzle-blast. The photograph shows the rifle in excellent detail, with the flash eliminator and sling swivels clearly visible. The rubber cushion on the buttplate can also be seen, adding to the overall durability and functionality of the weapon. The No 5 Mk I Lee Enfield rifle was first produced in the autumn of 1944 and was widely issued to British troops in the Far East. This photograph provides a fascinating glimpse into the design and features of this important military weapon used during World War II.
