EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th century print depicts the biblical scene of King Rehoboam seeking counsel from the elder men of Israel. According to the Old Testament narrative found in 1 Kings 12:6-15, Rehoboam had recently ascended to the throne of the United Kingdom of Israel following the death of his father, King Solomon. Facing a growing discontent among the Israelites due to the heavy taxation imposed by his father, Rehoboam sought advice from two groups of elders: those who had grown up with him in the palace and those who had lived through the reign of Solomon. The elder men who had grown up with Rehoboam advised him to lighten the burden on his people, speaking words of wisdom and reconciliation. However, the elders who had lived through Solomon's reign advised him to maintain the heavy taxation, warning him of the potential consequences of appeasing the Israelites. The image captures the moment of decision, with Rehoboam sitting on his throne, surrounded by the elders, as he ponders their counsel. The tension in the room is palpable, with the faces of the elders expressing a range of emotions from hope to fear. The Bible describes Rehoboam's ultimate decision to follow the advice of the elders who had lived through Solomon's reign, leading to the division of the United Kingdom of Israel. This evocative print offers a glimpse into the rich history of the Bible and the complexities of biblical stories. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of seeking wise counsel, especially during times of uncertainty and decision-making.
