EDITORS COMMENTS
Rama, the revered seventh avatar of the Hindu god Vishnu, is depicted in this image as he encounters the seductive advances of the Rakshasa demon, Shurpanakha. In the ancient Indian epic, the Ramayana, Rama, along with his brother Lakshmana, is wandering in the forest, unaware of the impending danger. Shurpanakha, enchanted by Rama's beauty, approaches him with the intention of becoming his wife. However, Rama, steadfast in his devotion to his wife Sita and his duty as a prince, rejects her advances. Infuriated by Rama's rejection, Shurpanakha seeks revenge. She tricks Lakshmana into revealing Rama's whereabouts and then approaches Sita, disguised as a sage. Sita, however, recognizes the deception and refuses her advances. Enraged, Shurpanakha threatens to kill Sita, leading Rama to engage in a fierce battle with her and her brother, the demon king Ravana. This image captures the moment of Rama's unwavering commitment to his moral principles, despite the allure of the demon's temptations. The intricate details of Rama's attire and the ominous expression on Shurpanakha's face convey the tension and drama of the scene. The rich colors and bold lines bring the myth to life, transporting us back to the ancient Indian forests where the epic tale of Rama unfolds.
