The Queens Excitement over the Struggle in the Stadium: A Captivating Moment from the 1908 London Olympics This evocative image captures a pivotal moment during the 1908 Olympics held in London, an event that drew an astonishing 80,000 spectators. In the foreground, Queen Alexandra, consort to King Edward VII, gazes intently at the unfolding drama in the stadium. The scene is the marathon, where Dorando Pietri of Italy, the leading competitor, collapses mere metres away from the finish line. The marathon, the longest and most grueling event of the games, had pushed the competitors to their limits. Pietri, visibly exhausted, had fallen several times before reaching the final stretch. Despite his collapse, he managed to complete the race first, only to be disqualified for accepting assistance from officials. The disqualification left the crowd in a state of shock, but Queen Alexandra, moved by Pietri's determination and perseverance, intervened. She awarded him a gold cup in recognition of his achievement, despite the official ruling. This act of compassion and understanding added to the excitement and drama of the day, making it a memorable moment in Olympic history. The 21st century viewer is transported back to this electrifying scene, witnessing the raw emotion and passion of the athletes and the crowd, as well as the compassion and grace of Queen Alexandra. This image, taken on the 24th of July 1908, is a testament to the enduring power of sports to bring people together and create unforgettable moments.
