EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking image captures the young and handsome Prince Albert (1819-61) in his prime, long before he became the beloved consort of Queen Victoria. Born on August 26, 1819, in Schloss Rosenau, Dresden, Germany, Albert was the eldest son of Duke Ernst I of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and Princess Louise of Saxe-Meiningen. Raised in a nurturing and loving environment, Albert was educated in various disciplines, including languages, music, and military tactics. The photograph, taken during Albert's youth, showcases his refined features, piercing gaze, and impeccable attire. Albert's early life was marked by tragedy, as he lost his mother at a young age and was raised by his father and paternal grandmother, Duchess Maria Antonia of the Two Sicilies. Despite these challenges, Albert grew up to be a well-rounded and intelligent young man, fluent in several languages and well-versed in various subjects. In 1840, Albert's life took a dramatic turn when he met and fell in love with Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom. Their union was a source of joy and stability for the young queen, who had been mourning the death of her beloved uncle, King William IV. Albert became the Prince Consort of the United Kingdom, and the couple went on to have nine children together. Albert's influence on Victorian society was profound, as he brought a sense of culture and refinement to the British court. He was a patron of the arts, a champion of education, and an advocate for social reform. Tragically, Albert passed away on December 14, 1861, leaving Victoria devastated and the British people in mourning. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the young, handsome prince who captured the heart of a queen and left an indelible mark on British history.
