EDITORS COMMENTS
Poor Mr. Meeker, surrounded by the remnants of his wife's latest round of entertaining gentlemen callers, appears bedridden and slightly put out in this humorous 1906 image. Mr. Meeker, an old and somewhat put-upon husband, lies in his bed, seemingly unable to muster the energy to object to the clutter of hats, canes, and other gentlemanly paraphernalia that have taken over his once orderly room. His wife's acquaintances have once again commandeered the space, leaving Mr. Meeker to feel slighted and cuckolded in his own home. The butler, standing in the background, looks on with a knowing smirk, adding to the bizarre domestic situation. The scene is reminiscent of a Charles Dana Gibson drawing, with its wry commentary on the role of men and women in society during the early 20th century. The use of a photograph adds to the nostalgic and humorous feel of the image, transporting us back to a time when the succession of gentleman callers was a common source of frustration and amusement for husbands. Despite Mr. Meeker's apparent resignation to the situation, one can't help but feel a twinge of sympathy for the poor man, who is clearly outnumbered and outmaneuvered in his own home. The image is a reminder that even in the most seemingly mundane of domestic situations, there can be a rich vein of humor and human emotion to be found.
