EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the moment of the coronation of Pope Pius XII, the new Roman Catholic Pope, as he is carried through St. Peter's Square on the Sedia Gestatoria, the papal throne carried on the shoulders of cardinals and other high-ranking clergy, on March 2, 1939. Pius XII, born Eugenio Pacelli, assumed the papacy following the death of Pope Pius XI. Dressed in the traditional papal robes, adorned with jewels and holding a jeweled mitre in his left hand, Pius XII raises his right hand in blessing as he makes his way to the basilica for his coronation. The Sedia Gestatoria, a symbol of the papal power and authority, has been used in papal processions since the 15th century. The coronation ceremony, which included the placement of the papal tiara on Pius XII's head and the presentation of the papal staff and ring, marked the formal beginning of his papacy. Pius XII's papacy, which lasted from 1939 to 1958, was marked by significant events in world history, including World War II and the establishment of the State of Israel. He is remembered for his diplomatic efforts to maintain peace and prevent the spread of communism, as well as his role in the development of the modern papacy and the Roman Catholic Church. This photograph provides a unique glimpse into the rich history of the papacy and the significance of the coronation ceremony in the life of a new pope. With its striking composition and historical importance, it is a valuable addition to any collection of religious or historical imagery.
