EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the sole surviving Miles M.28 Mercury 5 G-AJFE (msn 6697) during its first flight at Woodley, circa 1947. The Miles M.28 Mercury was a two-seat, single-engine monoplane designed for the private aviation market, featuring a cantilever wing and retractable landing gear. After its maiden voyage at Woodley, the aircraft was re-registered in Switzerland in June 1951 and remained there for nearly four years. In December 1954, G-AJFE returned to the United Kingdom. However, tragedy struck on 13 March 1955, when the plane was involved in a forced landing at West Hyde, Buckinghamshire. Despite the unfortunate ending, this photograph captures the essence of a bygone era in aviation history. The Miles M.28 Mercury 5 G-AJFE is an intriguing example of a post-World War II aeroplane, showcasing the beauty and elegance of early aviation design. This aeronautical treasure is a testament to the ingenuity and innovation that characterized the development of private aviation in the late 1940s and early 1950s.
