Four Patients playing billiards, Quex Park

Four hospital patients playing billiards in the Hall of Quex House, 1917. This billiards table was bought with the proceeds of a sale organised by the Powell-Cotton children, Diana aged 10, Mary aged 7 and Antoinette aged 4. The Hall of Quex House served as a recreation area for the patients of the hospital. The photograph was one of a number commissioned by Major Powell-Cotton from AH Siminson, photographer of St Lawrence, Ramsgate. It bears his embossing stamp in the bottom right corner. The Quex Park VAD Hospital opened on 15 October 1914 and closed on 31 January 1919. The hospital was run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment. The Commandant was Hannah Powell-Cotton (1881-1964), wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton (1866-1940) of Quex Park, founder of the Powell-Cotton Museum. Date: 1917

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment of respite and camaraderie among four patients at the Quex Park VAD Hospital in 1917. The billiards table, a source of entertainment and recreation, was purchased with the proceeds of a sale organized by the Powell-Cotton children, Diana (aged 10), Mary (aged 7), and Antoinette (aged 4). The Hall of Quex House, where the game was played, served as a sanctuary for the hospital's patients during their recovery. The photograph was commissioned by Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton of Quex Park, who also founded the Powell-Cotton Museum, and his wife Hannah, who served as the Commandant of the hospital. The image was captured by AH Siminson, a local Ramsgate photographer. The Quex Park VAD Hospital opened in October 1914 and closed in January 1919, run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment.
