EDITORS COMMENTS
HMS E4: A Testament to Resilience and Survival in the Early Days of Submarine Warfare This evocative photograph captures the sleek and imposing figure of HMS E4, an E-class submarine built by Vickers at their shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness. Commissioned on 28 January 1913, HMS E4 was one of the Royal Navy's most advanced submersibles of the time, designed to outmaneuver and outgun enemy vessels on the high seas. However, the serene image belies the harrowing history of this submarine. On 24 September 1915, HMS E4 was attacked by the German airship SL3, marking the first time a submarine had been targeted from the air. Although the attack caused only minor damage, it was a harbinger of things to come. Tragedy struck on 15 August 1916, when HMS E4 collided with her sister ship, E41, during exercises off Harwich. The impact was catastrophic, and both submarines sank, taking with them the lives of 77 crew members. Miraculously, all 14 survivors were rescued from E41. Despite the loss of life, the indomitable spirit of the Royal Navy prevailed. Both submarines were raised, repaired, and recommissioned, serving in the war effort until the end of World War I. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the brave men of the submarine service and the resilience of the Royal Navy during a time of great adversity.
