EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving showcases the stunning beauty of Stylidium affine, also known as Drummond's Stylidium or Stylidium drummondii. The botanical illustration was originally created by the talented Mrs. Augusta Withers and meticulously engraved by S. Nevitt for the publication "The Botanist," edited by Benjamin Maund and the Reverend John Stevens Henslow, in London during 1836. Stylidium affine is a unique and fascinating plant native to Australia, characterized by its distinctive bell-shaped flowers that resemble tiny drums. The plant belongs to the Stylidium genus, which is part of the Goodeniaceae family. The species name "affine" means "allied" or "related," while "Drummondii" honors the Scottish botanist David Drummond who first collected the plant in 1824. Mrs. Withers' illustration captures the intricate details of the Stylidium affine's flowers, which are adapted to attract pollinators through a process called thigmotropism. The flowers are sensitive to touch and open when an insect lands on them, revealing their nectar-filled spurs. This adaptation is a prime example of the remarkable evolutionary adaptations found in the Australian flora. The hand-colored copperplate engraving process involved creating a detailed drawing on copper plates, which were then etched with acid to create the lines and contours of the image. The plates were then hand-colored using watercolors, resulting in the rich and vibrant hues seen in this print. The Victorian-era botanical illustration not only showcases the botanical accuracy of the time but also the artistic skill and dedication of the illustrator and engraver. This image of Stylidium affine is a testament to the beauty and diversity of the natural world and the importance of documenting it through botanical illustrations. It serves as a reminder of the rich history of botanical exploration and the continued fascination with the natural world that drives scientific discovery.
