EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts Roman Emperor Constantius II, also known as Flavius Julius Constantius Augustus, who ruled the Western Roman Empire from 337 to 361 AD. The image is a copperplate engraving taken from Abraham Bogaerts' seminal work, "De Roomsche Monarchy," published in Utrecht in 1697. Constantius II was the eldest son of Emperor Constantine the Great and his second wife, Fausta. He was only 14 years old when he began his reign following the assassination of his father. During his rule, Constantius II faced numerous challenges, including rebellions and usurpations. One of his most significant adversaries was Magnentius, who claimed the imperial throne in 350 AD. Despite these challenges, Constantius II managed to maintain control of the empire and expand its territories. The engraving captures the regal presence of Constantius II, with his piercing gaze and stern expression. He is depicted wearing the imperial diadem, a symbol of his authority, and holding a scepter in his right hand. The background features the traditional imperial palm branch and the inscription "CAESAR," emphasizing his status as a Caesar, or emperor. The copperplate engraving technique was a popular method for producing high-quality prints during the 17th century. It involved creating an image on a copper plate using a sharp tool, which was then inked and pressed onto paper. The result was a detailed and precise reproduction of the original image. This portrait of Constantius II is a testament to the enduring legacy of the Roman Empire and the continued fascination with its history and leaders. It also highlights the importance of printmaking in the dissemination of historical knowledge during the early modern period.
