EDITORS COMMENTS
Marie-Caroline Ferdinande Louise, Duchess of Berry (1798-1870), was a prominent figure in the French aristocracy during the 19th century. Born in Palermo, Sicily, as the eldest daughter of King Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies, Marie-Caroline was known for her beauty, intelligence, and strong will. In this stunning handcoloured lithograph by Madame Calon, Marie-Caroline is depicted in the height of 18th century fashion, wearing a voluminous dress adorned with intricate floral patterns and a matching shawl. Her hair is styled in the popular "waterfall" curls, cascading down her back in soft waves. The Duchess' piercing blue eyes and delicate features are captured in exquisite detail, making for a truly captivating image. Marie-Caroline's marriage to the future King Louis-Philippe of France in 1830 brought her to the French court, where she became a beloved figure among the aristocracy. However, her relationship with her husband was not without its challenges, and she was known for her extravagant lifestyle and political ambitions. Despite her controversies, Marie-Caroline remained a symbol of elegance and grace, and her fashion choices continued to influence the French aristocracy for decades to come. This beautiful lithograph, taken from Paul Lacroix's "Costumes Historiques de la France," offers a glimpse into the opulence and sophistication of the French court during the 19th century, and serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of Marie-Caroline, Duchess of Berry.
