EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, the Handley Page Victor K.2 XH673 (8911M) is seen being assembled on the parade ground at RAF Marham, circa 1990. The Handley Page Victor, a iconic British four-engine turboprop strategic bomber, served with the Royal Air Force (RAF) for over four decades. This particular aircraft, XH673, is a K.2 variant, which was used for the maritime reconnaissance role. The image captures the meticulous process of assembling the aircraft, with ground crew members working diligently to position the wings, tail, and other components into place. The Victor's distinctive shape, with its large wings and four engines, is a testament to the engineering prowess of the time. Sadly, the days of the Handley Page Victor were numbered by the late 1990s, and XH673 was eventually scrapped in 2020. Despite concerted efforts to preserve the aircraft and find it a new home, it was ultimately dismantled and its parts sold for scrap. The Handley Page Victor was a significant part of the RAF's aviation history, and its retirement marked the end of an era. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the aircraft's grand presence on the tarmac, and the dedication of the ground crew who kept it flying for so many years. The Handley Page Victor may no longer be in the skies, but its legacy lives on through images like this one.
