EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Jean Baptiste Guyard after an illustration by Jean-Gabriel Pretre for Bernard Germain de Lacepede's Natural History of Oviparous Quadrupeds, Snakes, Fish and Cetaceans, published in Paris in 1825, showcases three magnificent and endangered marine turtle species: the Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas), Loggerhead Turtle (Caretta caretta), and Leatherback Turtle (Dermochelys coriacea). The Green Sea Turtle, depicted on the left, is a large, herbivorous turtle with a heart-shaped carapace and a greenish color due to its fat-rich diet. It is currently listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List. The Loggerhead Turtle, in the middle, is characterized by its large, powerful foreflippers and a reddish-brown heart-shaped carapace. It is an omnivorous species and is also Endangered. The Leatherback Turtle, shown on the right, is the largest living turtle and the only one lacking a hard shell, instead having a leathery one. It is a deep-ocean dweller and is Critically Endangered, with populations declining due to bycatch, habitat loss, and climate change. This beautiful engraving serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting these magnificent creatures and their habitats. The intricate details and vibrant colors showcase the artists' skill and dedication to accurately representing these important species. Today, conservation efforts are underway to help these turtles recover from the threats they face, including habitat protection, reduction of bycatch, and public education. By appreciating their beauty and understanding their importance in our ecosystems, we can help ensure their survival for future generations.
