EDITORS COMMENTS
This figure depicts the Egyptian goddess Hathor, graciously bestowing her protective blessings upon Pharaoh Seti I in a scene from his tomb in Thebes, discovered by the Italian explorer Giovanni Battista Belzoni in the early 19th century. Hathor, the goddess of love, music, dance, fertility, and motherhood, is often depicted as a cow or with cow's horns and solar disc on her head, symbolizing her connection to the heavens and the nurturing earth. In this image, she is shown in human form, wearing a elegant headdress adorned with the solar disc and cow's horns. With her right hand, she tenderly holds Seti I's hand, offering him her menat necklace as a symbol of her protection and divine favor. The menat necklace, a common accessory for Egyptian goddesses and royal women, was believed to ward off evil and ensure the wearer's well-being. This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Giulio Ferrario for his publication "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," beautifully captures the richness and complexity of ancient Egyptian religion and the deep connection between the pharaoh and the gods.
