This exquisite hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Black Grouper, Mycteroperca bonaci, also known as the threadfin grouper, black bream, or pentapodus fasciolatus. The illustration is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Sciences, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840), who is considered one of the greatest illustrators of the 19th century. Turpin's meticulous attention to detail is evident in the intricate textures and patterns of the Black Grouper's scales, as well as the delicate shading used to bring the fish to life. The Black Grouper is a large, deep-water fish that can be found in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. It is a popular game fish and is also valued for its culinary delicacy. The Black Grouper's body is elongated and compressed, with a large head and powerful jaws.
