EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking oil painting depicts Dr. William Gamble (1689-1778), an esteemed Irish physician and scientist of the 18th century. The portrait, believed to have been painted around 1740, captures Dr. Gamble in the prime of his career. He is shown wearing the traditional attire of a physician, with a long robe and a mortar and pestle at his side. His piercing gaze and confident posture convey a sense of intelligence and authority. Dr. Gamble was born in County Down, Northern Ireland, and received his medical education in Edinburgh, Scotland. He later returned to Ireland, where he established a successful medical practice in Dublin. Gamble was a leading figure in the medical community of his time, and was known for his expertise in surgery and obstetrics. He was also a prolific writer, publishing numerous articles and books on various medical topics. Despite his many accomplishments, Dr. Gamble is perhaps best known for his groundbreaking work on the treatment of smallpox. In the 1730s, he developed a new method for inoculating against the disease, which involved using material from a mild case of smallpox to create immunity. This method, which came to be known as "variolation," was a precursor to the modern practice of vaccination. The painting of Dr. William Gamble is a testament to his significant contributions to the field of medicine during the 18th century. It serves as a reminder of the important role that Irish scientists and physicians played in the advancement of medical knowledge during this time period.
