EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning watercolor painting depicts the Morepork Ruru or Laughing Owl Whekau (Ninox novaeseelandiae, Sceloglaux albifacies), a native owl species endemic to New Zealand. The artwork is taken from Sir Walter Lawry Buller's "A History of the Birds of New Zealand," Volume 2, Plate 20, dated 1888. The painting was created by the renowned Dutch natural history illustrator, John Gerrard Keulemans (1842-1912). The Morepork Ruru is a medium-sized owl, with a distinctive facial disc that is darker than its background, helping it to blend in with its surroundings. Its plumage is mainly dark brown, with white spots on its chest and underparts. This owl is named for its distinctive call, which sounds like a laugh or a series of chuckles. The Laughing Owl Whekau is a nocturnal bird, and it hunts primarily by listening for the sounds of its prey. Its diet consists mainly of insects, but it also eats small mammals, reptiles, and birds. The Morepork Ruru is found throughout New Zealand, including the offshore islands. It is an important cultural symbol for the Maori people, who consider it a guardian of the forest and a protector of children. This beautiful watercolor painting not only showcases the natural beauty of the Morepork Ruru but also provides a glimpse into the rich natural history of New Zealand during the late 19th century. Keulemans' meticulous attention to detail and his ability to capture the essence of the bird make this artwork a true masterpiece.
