EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Martin B-10B 38-1939 bomber, an export model destined for the Dutch East Indies, as it takes to the skies prior to its unfortunate fate. The B-10B was a variant of the Martin B-10, a twin-engine, medium bomber produced by the Glenn L. Martin Company for the United States Army Air Corps during the late 1930s. This specific aircraft was one of several sold to the Dutch military under a foreign military sale agreement. As the world teetered on the brink of war in 1941, the B-10B, along with other Allied aircraft, were deployed to the Dutch East Indies to bolster the region's defenses against potential Japanese aggression. However, on December 7, 1941, Japan launched a surprise attack on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and followed up with a series of attacks on Allied forces and territories throughout Southeast Asia, including the Dutch East Indies. The Martin B-10B 38-1939, along with many other Allied aircraft, was nearly all lost during the Japanese onslaught. The Dutch East Indies, now known as Indonesia, became a major battleground in the Pacific Theater of World War II, with the Japanese ultimately securing control of the region in early 1942. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the brave men who flew these aircraft and the tragic events that unfolded during the early days of the Second World War.
