This striking portrait captures the regal presence of Louis-Philippe-Joseph, King Louis XVIII of France (1755-1824). The image, taken from the Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the historical significance of this monarch during a pivotal time in French history. Born in Versailles, Louis XVIII was the younger brother of King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. He went into exile during the French Revolution and the Reign of Terror, returning to France after the Bourbon Restoration in 1814, following the abdication of Napoleon Bonaparte. Louis XVIII's reign was marked by a desire for stability and the restoration of the monarchy. He issued the Charter of 1814, which established a constitutional monarchy in France. However, his rule was not without challenges.
