Louis XVI (1754-1793): A Monarch in Weighty Splendor This striking image captures the regal presence of King Louis XVI of France, dressed in his most formal attire, as depicted in the portrait by Jean-Baptiste Greuze's student, Jean-Baptiste Duval, between 1754 and 1793. The King's serious expression and the richness of his court dress underscore the weighty responsibilities and solemnity of the monarchy during the Ancien Régime in France. Louis XVI ascended to the throne in 1774, following the death of his grandfather, Louis XV. In this portrait, the young king is shown in his smartest and most formal attire, which included a long, voluminous red velvet robe lined with ermine fur, a white lace cravat, and a three-cornered hat adorned with a white plume. The intricate design of the dress, combined with the opulence of the fabric and the fur, symbolized the power and wealth of the French monarchy. However, this grandeur and splendor were soon to be challenged. The French Revolution, which began in 1789, brought an end to the Ancien Régime and the monarchy itself. Louis XVI was eventually tried and executed in 1793, marking the end of an era and the dawn of a new chapter in French history. This image serves as a poignant reminder of the grandeur and weight of the French monarchy during the Ancien Régime, as well as the tumultuous events that led to its demise. The intricate details of the King's court dress, captured in Duval's painting, offer a glimpse into the opulence and majesty of the French court, while also highlighting the historical significance of the period.
