EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in the late 1890s, captures the LCC-MFB (London County Council Metropolitan Fire Brigade) Streatham sub-station and engine. During the construction of the new fire station, a sub-station was established to serve the local community. The building in the image housed the horse-drawn escape cart and the steamer, an essential piece of firefighting equipment at the time. The firemen resided in the house adjacent to the sub-station. The horse-drawn escape cart was a vital component of the fire service during the Victorian era. It was designed to transport firefighters to and from a burning building, ensuring their safety while they bravely fought the flames. The steamer, though not visible in the photograph, was a powerful fire engine that used steam pressure to pump water through a hose. The London Fire Brigade, established in 1865, was responsible for protecting Londoners from fire hazards. The brigade's crews were known for their courage and dedication, often risking their lives to save others. The horse and cart were essential parts of their transport and equipment, enabling them to respond quickly and effectively to emergencies. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, providing a fascinating insight into the firefighting methods and equipment used during the late 1890s. Today, the London Fire Brigade continues to protect Londoners using modern technology and techniques, but the legacy of the horse-drawn escape cart and steamers remains an important part of the fire service's rich history.
