EDITORS COMMENTS
Little Janes Cottage, Brading, Isle of Wight, Hampshire: A Window into the Past This charming photograph, taken in 1909, captures the quaint and unassuming Little Janes Cottage in Brading, Isle of Wight, Hampshire. Nestled amidst the picturesque countryside, this humble dwelling holds a rich historical significance that reaches back to the late 18th century. Formerly the home of Jane Squibb, a young girl who lived in Brading during the late 1700s, this cottage was the setting for a poignant and heartwarming tale of compassion and community. Jane was a regular visitor to the Sunday School classes held at St Mary's Church, Brading, where she formed a special bond with the curate-in-charge, the Reverend Leigh Richmond (Legh). Jane's story, as recorded in the Annals of the Poor by the Reverend Richmond, is a testament to the impact of a caring and dedicated clergyman on the lives of his parishioners. Despite his many responsibilities as the curate of Brading and Yaverland from 1797 to 1805, Richmond made it a point to engage with the children in his Sunday School classes, providing them with an education and a sense of belonging. Jane, who was afflicted with tuberculosis, attended these classes until her untimely death at the age of 15 on 30 January 1799. She is buried in the St Mary's churchyard, her memory forever etched in the annals of the community. The Reverend Richmond, a man of remarkable ingenuity, is also known for his invention of the boards used in churches worldwide to display hymn numbers. His legacy extends far beyond Brading, leaving a lasting impact on the world of worship and education. This photograph of Little Janes Cottage offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when community, compassion, and the power of education came together to shape the lives of those who lived in this idyllic corner of Hampshire.
