EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate engraving showcases the Lesser Cagui Monkey, scientifically known as Callithrix jacchus, also referred to as the Sagui or Marmoset. The image is taken from The Naturalist's Pocket Magazine; or, Complete Cabinet of the Curiosities and Beauties of Nature, published by Harrison in London between 1798 and 1802. The Lesser Cagui Monkey is a New World primate native to Central and South America. They are characterized by their small size, with an average length of 12 inches and a weight of around 1 pound. Their fur is typically grayish-brown, with a lighter underbelly, and they have a distinctive white patch on their face. Marmosets, including the Lesser Cagui Monkey, are unique among primates as they possess a specialized claw on their thumbs, which they use to excavate bark for insects and other arthropods. They are also known for their ability to produce a loud, piercing call, which they use to communicate with other members of their troop. This engraving is a testament to the natural history illustration techniques of the late 18th century. The intricate details of the monkey's fur, facial features, and posture are beautifully rendered, making it a valuable addition to any natural history collection. The use of hand-coloring adds an additional layer of depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a stunning representation of this fascinating species.
