EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures Lady Evelyn Guinness (1883-1939), formerly Lady Evelyn Hilda Stuart Erskine, enjoying a moment of respite on the East Coast beach with two of her young children during the tumultuous year of 1915. Lady Evelyn, wife of Walter Guinness, 1st Earl Moyne, and mother of Bryan Guinness and Murtogh, is dressed in a stylish yet practical summer outfit, her expression reflecting a blend of happiness and concern as she watches her offspring at play. The eldest child, Bryan, is engrossed in the creation of a sandcastle, his small spade raised in determination. The younger child, Murtogh, sits nearby, perhaps taking a break from his own sandy pursuits. The idyllic scene belies the underlying tension of the time, with the First World War raging on and Walter Guinness serving as a lieutenant-colonel in the Yeomanry. The Guinness family, part of the British upper class, were known for their prominence in society and their philanthropic endeavors. This photograph offers a rare glimpse into their personal lives, revealing the simple joys and challenges of family life amidst the backdrop of historical upheaval. This portrait, taken in 1915, is a poignant reminder of the resilience and adaptability of families during times of adversity and the importance of cherishing moments of happiness and connection.
