EDITORS COMMENTS
In this elegant photograph, Lady Ermyntrude Malet, née Sackville-Russell, is depicted in the regal splendor of her Berlin residence, as the wife of Sir Edward Baldwin Malet, the British Ambassador to Germany from 1892 to 1898. The image, captured in 1893, showcases Lady Malet's refined beauty and impeccable style, as she sits gracefully in a sumptuous armchair, dressed in an intricately patterned gown and adorned with a magnificent diamond necklace. The richly textured wallpaper and ornate furnishings of the room further accentuate her elegance and the grandeur of her position. Lady Ermyntrude Malet was the eldest daughter of the 3rd Duke of Dorset and the Hon. Lady Elizabeth Sackville-Germain. She married Sir Edward Malet in 1863, and their union produced five children. Sir Edward, a distinguished diplomat, served in various diplomatic posts throughout Europe and the Middle East, including as the British Minister to the Ottoman Porte and as the British Ambassador to Germany. During their time in Berlin, Lady Malet became a prominent figure in the city's social scene, hosting lavish receptions and entertaining diplomats, artists, and intellectuals. Her salon was a gathering place for luminaries of the time, including the writer Thomas Mann and the composer Richard Strauss. This photograph captures a moment of quiet repose in the midst of her busy and influential life, offering a glimpse into the opulence and sophistication of late-19th-century diplomatic society.
