EDITORS COMMENTS
In this enchanting photograph, Ettie, Lady Desborough, is seen doting on her grandchildren, Julian and Rosemary Salmond. Ettie, born Ethel Anne Priscilla Grenfell, was a prominent figure in Edwardian society and a central member of the exclusive Souls club. She was the wife of William Henry Grenfell, Baron Desborough, and the mother of Julian Grenfell, the renowned war poet, and Gerald William (Billy) Grenfell, who both tragically lost their lives during the First World War. The children in the photograph are not Ettie's but belong to her elder daughter, Monica Grenfell, who had married Air Marshal Sir John Salmond. The image captures a tender moment between the grandmother and her grandchildren, showcasing the deep bond they shared. Ettie's elegant and refined demeanor, with her piercing gaze and impeccably dressed attire, is a testament to her aristocratic upbringing and the era she lived in. The photograph, taken in 1930, offers a glimpse into the lives of the aristocracy during the Edwardian period, an era marked by opulence, grandeur, and tradition. The image is a poignant reminder of the close-knit family ties that existed within the aristocratic circles, despite the hardships and losses they faced during the First World War. This photograph, by Illustrated London News Ltd/Mary Evans, is a beautiful and evocative piece of history that transports us back in time, allowing us to witness a moment of love and connection between a grandmother and her grandchildren in the heart of the Edwardian era.
