EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the regal presence of Vittorio Emanuele III, the King of Italy and Albania, as well as Emperor of Ethiopia, in an undated image from the Mary Evans Prints Online archive. Born on January 11, 1869, in Turin, Italy, Emanuele ascended to the throne following the death of his father, King Umberto I, in 1900. During his reign, which lasted until 1946, Emanuele faced numerous challenges, including World War I and the Fascist regime led by Benito Mussolini. In 1936, he was proclaimed Emperor of Ethiopia after the Italian conquest of that country. However, his rule was marked by controversy and resistance, culminating in the Second World War and the eventual fall of the Fascist regime. In this photograph, the King is depicted in formal attire, wearing the collar of the Order of the Annunciation and the collar of the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus. His solemn expression and steady gaze convey a sense of determination and resilience, reflecting the historical significance of his reign. The image of Vittorio Emanuele III as King of Italy and Albania, as well as Emperor of Ethiopia, is an intriguing representation of the complexities of European monarchy during the first half of the 20th century. This historical photograph offers a glimpse into the past, providing valuable insights into the life and legacy of a monarch who played a pivotal role in shaping the political landscape of Europe and beyond.
