EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph, taken in 1934, the Duke of Kent, George, is seen beaming with joy as he stands next to his fiancée, Marina, Princess of Greece and Denmark. The young couple's happiness is palpable as they look into each other's eyes, a clear indication of their deep affection for one another. The Duke of Kent, born on December 20, 1902, was the third son of King George V and Queen Mary. He was the younger brother of King Edward VIII and King George VI. In 1934, he announced his engagement to Marina, who was the eldest daughter of Prince Nicholas of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg. Marina, who was born on November 26, 1906, was a popular figure in European royal circles. Her mother was a granddaughter of Queen Victoria, making her a cousin of King George V. The couple's engagement was met with great enthusiasm by the British public, who were eager to see the Duke of Kent settle down. The photograph was taken just a few years before the Duke of Kent's marriage to Marina on November 29, 1934, at Westminster Abbey. Their wedding was a grand affair, attended by members of the British and Greek royal families, as well as other European royals. The happy couple went on to have three children together: Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, born in 1935; Princess Alexandra, born in 1936; and Prince Michael of Kent, born in 1942. Tragically, the Duke of Kent was killed in action during World War II on August 25, 1942, while serving as a pilot in the Royal Air Force. This photograph is a poignant reminder of a happier time in the lives of the Duke of Kent and Marina, before the tragedies that were to come. It is a testament to their love and the joy they brought to each other and to the British people.
