EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking CDV (carte de visite) photograph captures the intense gaze and unyielding determination of John Rouse Merriott Chard, a British Army officer who played a pivotal role in the defense of Rorke's Drift during the Anglo-Zulu War in 1879. Born on October 23, 1847, Chard joined the Royal Engineers in 1863 and served in various capacities in India, Malta, and Canada before being posted to South Africa. During the Zulu War, Chard distinguished himself at the Battle of Isandlwana on January 22, 1879, where he was severely wounded. Despite his injuries, he rallied his men and led them to the safety of Rorke's Drift, a mission station and military outpost. There, on January 23, the Zulu army launched a fierce attack on the small British garrison, numbering only 150 men. Chard, who had taken command of the defense, led his men in a heroic stand, repelling wave after wave of Zulu attacks for 12 hours. The photograph captures Chard in his military uniform, complete with a thick moustache that was a common fashion among Victorian-era military men. The image conveys a sense of resilience and leadership, reflecting the courage and fortitude that Chard and his men displayed during the Battle of Rorke's Drift. The photograph was likely taken in 1897, some 18 years after the battle, when Chard had risen to the rank of Major. The event remains a significant moment in British military history, and Chard's leadership and bravery continue to be celebrated as a testament to human resilience and determination.
