EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the intense and intellectual gaze of the Reverend John Flavel, a prominent Presbyterian divine of the 17th century. The image, created anonymously in 1796, offers a glimpse into the life of a man who dedicated his career to the study and dissemination of God's word. Born in Devon, England, in 1630, Flavel was educated at Exeter College, Oxford, and ordained as a minister in the Church of England. However, his commitment to Calvinist theology led him to join the Presbyterian Church in 1662, during a time when such a move carried significant risks. Despite the challenges, Flavel continued to preach and write, producing works that would become influential in the development of Presbyterian theology. Flavel's most famous work, "The Fountain of Life," was published in 1672 and explored the nature of true conversion and the importance of the inner workings of the human heart. He also wrote extensively on the topic of prayer, emphasizing the importance of a personal and fervent relationship with God. Despite his theological convictions, Flavel managed to avoid persecution during the tumultuous period of English history known as the "Glorious Revolution" and the subsequent reign of King William III. He died in 1691, leaving behind a rich legacy of writings that continue to inspire and challenge Christians today. This portrait, created over a century after Flavel's death, serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring impact of his work. The artist captures the depth of Flavel's faith and the intensity of his intellectual pursuit, making this an invaluable addition to any collection of historical portraits or theological studies.
