EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative 15th century print depicts the Passover Seder, a central ritual in Jewish tradition and history. Passover, or Pesach in Hebrew, commemorates the Exodus from Egypt, when the ancient Israelites were freed from slavery. The Seder, which means 'order' in Hebrew, is a ceremonial meal that reenacts the story of the Exodus and symbolizes the continuity of Jewish identity and faith. The image captures the essence of the Seder, with its distinctive symbols and rituals. At the center of the table, a matzah, or unleavened bread, is prominently displayed, representing the haste with which the Israelites left Egypt and their inability to wait for their dough to rise. A roasted shank bone, or zeroa, symbolizes the Passover sacrifice in the Temple in Jerusalem. Three matzahs are stacked and covered with a cloth, representing the three matzot that the Israelites were instructed to take on their journey from Egypt. The Seder plate, filled with symbolic foods, is also featured in the print. The bitter herbs, or maror, represent the bitter slavery of the Israelites in Egypt. The charoset, a sweet mixture of apples, nuts, and wine, symbolizes the mortar used by the Israelites in their bondage. The roasted egg, or beitzah, represents the offering brought in the Temple, and the shank bone, or zeroa, represents the Passover sacrifice. The Seder is a time for families and communities to come together, to tell the story of the Exodus, and to celebrate the enduring strength and resilience of the Jewish people. This beautiful and historic print offers a glimpse into the rich symbolism and tradition of the Passover Seder, a testament to the enduring power of faith and the importance of remembering our past.
