EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases Locomotive No. 271, a magnificent 4-4-2 Atlantic Type steam engine, as it roars down the railway tracks. The engine, a masterpiece of Victorian engineering, was built in 1897 by the Great Northern Railway (GNR) in the United Kingdom. The Atlantic Type designation refers to the engine's ability to draw water from a tank located between the wheels, allowing it to travel longer distances without refueling. The intricate details of the engine's design are on full display in this image. The shiny brass fittings, polished metal surfaces, and the large, powerful wheels create a striking contrast against the dark background of the railway. The billowing plumes of steam add a sense of motion and energy to the scene. The Atlantic Type locomotives were known for their speed and power, making them ideal for long-distance passenger trains. This particular engine, No. 271, was one of the most famous locomotives in the GNR fleet, and was often used on prestigious trains such as the 'Flying Scotsman.' The golden age of steam railways had come to an end by the mid-20th century, and many engines like No. 271 were retired or scrapped. However, this photograph captures a moment in time when these magnificent machines were still in their prime, and the romance and excitement of steam train travel was at its height.
