HMS Marlborough - Lining Ships side as the General departs

HMS Marlborough - Lining Ships side as General Harrington departs in his launch - at Dolmabahce, Bosphorus Strait, Istanbul, Turkey. In August 1923, the Allied Powers turned over Istanbul to the Nationalists, marking the final departure of occupation armies from Anatolia. This card marks the occasion of the Allied Generals handing over the custody of the city at the Dolmabahce Palace. HMS Marlborough was an Iron Duke-class battleship of the British Royal Navy, named in honour of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough. Built at Devonport Royal Dockyard between January 1912 and June 1914 and entered service just prior to First World War. Assigned to the Mediterranean Fleet after the war, Marlborough took part in the Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War (in the Black Sea 191920). She was also involved in the Greco-Turkish War. Date: 1923

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the historic moment of the Allied Powers' withdrawal from Istanbul, Turkey, in August 1923. The image shows HMS Marlborough, an Iron Duke-class battleship of the British Royal Navy, lining the side of the ship as General Harrington departs in his launch from Dolmabahce Palace, located on the Bosphorus Strait. The Marlborough, named after John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, was built at Devonport Royal Dockyard between 1912 and 1914 and entered service just prior to the First World War. Assigned to the Mediterranean Fleet after the war, the Marlborough took part in the Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War in the Black Sea (1919-1920) and was also involved in the Greco-Turkish War. With the final departure of occupation armies from Anatolia, this scene marks the symbolic end of the Allied presence in Istanbul. The sailors on the Marlborough's rail salute the departing General, their determined expressions reflecting the significance of this moment in history. The Marlborough's imposing presence on the water underscores the military might that once held sway over the Bosphorus Straits, now a vital international waterway. This photograph is a poignant reminder of a bygone era and the shifting political landscape of the 1920s.
