EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite miniature painting depicts Henri IV of France, also known as Henri le Grand or Henri the Great, who ruled as King of France from 1589 until his assassination in 1610. Born in 1553 as Henri de Bourbon, he was the bastard son of Jeanne de Bourbon and Antoine de Bourbon, Duke of Vendôme. Despite his illegitimate birth, Henri rose to become a military leader and a key figure in the French Wars of Religion. In 1589, after the death of Henry III, Henri was elected King of France by the Estates-General, marking the end of the Valois dynasty and the beginning of the Bourbon rule. His election was significant as he was a Huguenot, a Protestant, and his reign marked the beginning of religious tolerance in France. Henri was a charismatic leader, known for his military prowess, his love of hunting, and his patronage of the arts. He was also a womanizer and had numerous mistresses, the most famous of whom was Gabrielle d'Estrées, who gave birth to a son, Henri, in 1563, who was recognized as the King's legitimate heir. This miniature painting, created around 1610, captures Henri in his later years, with a serious expression and a well-groomed beard. He is depicted wearing the robes of a king, with a fur-trimmed mantle draped over his shoulders. The intricate details of the painting, from the folds of the fabric to the texture of the beard, are a testament to the skill of the miniature painter. Henri IV was assassinated in 1610, at the age of 57, by a fanatic monk, François Ravaillac, who believed that the King's sinful lifestyle would lead to the downfall of France. Despite his controversial personal life, Henri is remembered as a great king who brought stability to France after years of religious conflict. This miniature painting is a beautiful reminder of his reign and his enduring legacy.
