Constant's literary career began in the late 1780s when he published his first poem, "Les Cigales," which gained him recognition in literary circles. However, it was his political writings that would truly make him famous. A staunch liberal, Constant advocated for individual liberties and constitutional government. His most influential work, "Adolphe," a novel published in 1816, is considered a seminal work of French Romantic literature. In the political sphere, Constant served as a deputy in the French National Assembly from 1795 to 1799, where he played a key role in drafting the French Constitution of 1795. He later served as the French ambassador to Prussia and the United Kingdom. Despite his political achievements, Constant's life was not without controversy. He was exiled from France several times for his liberal views, and his personal life was marked by tragedy.
